Footfall Lore

A Paradise Lost

Once envisioned as the greatest palatial waystation by its famed architect, Rogue Trader Parsimus Dewain, in 410.M41, the Imperial void port now known as Footfall is but a glimmer of what could have been.

Settled into the porous rockface of countless asteroids is a vast array of docking stations, berthing bays, habblocks and great chains that bind them all together. The greatest of which sits in the center where a vast, monumental statue of the God-Emperor Himself is carved out of the largest asteroid. It looks down upon all who dwell within the expansive habitation, judging both scum and the devout in equal measure. But the palatial edifices found throughout do little to detract from the fact that what now exists is little better than a shanty town erected around baroque Imperial architecture. Yet this glorified port city plays host to some of the most powerful figures and widespread factions of the Koronus Expanse.

Beyond the criminal syndicates, religious sects, Imperial institutions and what petty illegal elements called the waystation home were the Rogue Traders—Footfall’s ever-changing caste of Lords and Ladies.

Whenever a Rogue Trader finds their way into Footfall, they are treated with all the honors of royalty. Each one serving as the waystation’s ruler for the duration of their stay. But when those who bring wealth and prosperity to the station are not gracing the baroque shanty halls with their presence, it is the various factions that dominate the sprawling network of void stations. From the Kasballica Mission, the Followers of Saint Druisa, Explorators and the dregs of both the navy and what piratical elements lurk around. Each one has a stake in the continued prosperity of the Expanse’s most reliable harbor.

But how does one keep such a place afloat?

Cold Trade

Dealing in Xenos antiquities, bodies and relics is punishable by death insofar as Imperial law is concerned, thus making the cold trade among the riskiest business ventures would-be merchants and scum can wade out into. It is a market dominated by some of the most cut-throat businessmen and women, each more influential than the last. Yet for up-and-comers, whether they have gold-plated augments or not, it is the most lucrative and viable method of clawing out of poverty.

While some dabble in it so they might officially destroy the sacrilegious items, many engage in the cold trade so they might come by exotic materials and eye-catching trinkets to spice up their homes. But others trundle through this market in search of stranger things still, tools and trinkets which they might use in their adventures through the expanse.

Something an erstwhile Rogue Trader might be interested in if they wish to get an edge on the competition. But one must know the ins and outs of Footfall to best navigate its winding physical and political corridors.

Amid Asteroids

Spread throughout vessels shackled to the void stations and a labyrinthine network of habitation units, habblocks, shanty towns and baroque palatial corridors sit a world unto itself. There are far too many areas to list in any reasonable fashion, each one playing host to a varied ecosystem of brigands and servicemen looking for some manner of relief. But the areas most frequented are those where commerce, trade, shady deals and official politicking are conducted.

And said areas would be: the Atrium, the liege’s residence, Void Dock Alpha-Rho, the Martyr’s Endurance, and a slum colloquially known as the Shadow Quarters.

Void Dock Alpha-Rho

dock

One of countless docks scattered throughout Footfall, Alpha-Rho often plays host to the most abundant foot traffic. It also is known to take in shuttles dispatched from Rogue Trader vessels, thus making it the sight for great fanfare as well as political turmoil. Especially when the local gangs decide to try their hand at regicide. But while violence and commerce are the backdrop upon which the day-to-day of Alpha-Rho, it is not all there is to see.

People from far-flung planets or even ports beyond the Expanse frequent this area. They bring with them all sorts of colors and stories for an enterprising mind to listen to, tales of woe and weal from all manner of things. Rumors abound in places such as these.

From here does the Rogue Trader stride out into the rest of Footfall, and from here will they find a valuable contact to be made with the Explorator fleets of the Koronus Expanse.

Atrium

atrium

Higher up the totem pole of asteroids is the Atrium, one of the many beating hearts of Footfall, where several incredibly significant locations and factions tend to dwell.

Situated further up along the chain of asteroids is a vast habitation unit that encompasses many places of business, residence, administrative offices, shrines and even a marketplace where a dozen curiosities take place. Carnival barkers show off their capering freaks, mail is delivered by runner, and civility breaks down in sporadic bursts of civil disturbance. Here is where sinners come to confess to Father Hieronymus Doloroso, the foremost representative of the  Drusians, or line up outside the liege’s residence to try and set up a meeting with the august governor of Footfall himself.

But it is also where people come to do deals and engage in whatever they might think of in their day-to-day life aboard this venerable void station.

Liege's Residence

liege

Within the Atrium lies the liege’s residence, a place where Rogue Traders visit to engage with the foremost governor of Footfall and where said governor abides while directing the daily affairs of hundreds of thousands of citizens.

Footfall’s current governor, Vladaym Tocara, is the most direct servant of any Rogue Trader who docks for a time at the waystation. He maintains the finances, well-being and continued running of the entire station when a Rogue Trader is not present. But he also maintains his stance as the “official” representative, insofar as such an organization can have an official, of the Kasballica Mission. Through the connections he has to this criminal syndicate, he maintains an iron fist over the cold trade.

But when he is not engaging in the day-to-day affairs of his hardwon office or playing host to a Rogue Trader, he is sweeping nuisances under the rug whenever they rear their head from the station’s seedier corners.

Shadow Quarters

shadowquarters

Tucked away into the belly of Footfall is a place where the dregs, scum and would-bes washed up to find food, clothing, amasec and someone to mug for what gelt they can scrounge up. A place unlike any other—the Shadow Quarters.

Many merchants who cannot afford the luxury of safer locales or engage in less organized petty crimes find their way to the Shadow Quarters. A place that is simultaneously a slums and shanty town amid the poorest area of Footfall. Dissent and violence foment intense rivalries here, a place where everything is bought and everything is for sale. But in order to deal with the likes of the Fellowship of the Void and seedier businesses, one must be willing to engage with the needy, desperate and less savory gangs who question the importance of the lot they find themselves in.

Something worse may well fester within this place, where the downtrodden are furthest from the Emperor’s light. Many, though, find solace at the bottom of a bottle in the Adeptus Amasecus.

Martyr's Endurance

amasecus

Once a proud Administratum ship sent out to help reclaim some of the glory lost upon Parsimus’ death, the Martyr’s Endurance soon became just another hapless island to get chained to the rest of Footfall’s asteroids—a permanent mooring that rendered it into the Adeptus Amasecus, a dive bar for all clienteles.

Merchants, the Fellowship, an ambitious cold trader, as well as an insightful bartender keep both the swill and finer wines on tap flowing for anyone with woes to drown and money burning in their pockets. Rumors abound in this place, as well as unique characters with stories to tell about the Expanse, Footfall and beyond.
