Commorragh

The Dark City

Dwelling in the cloudy wounds festering across the galaxy over is the stitched-together carcass of something once resplendent and shining. Monsters dwell within this city. They writhe in the shadow of an endless dark age with glinting claws and salivating teeth. But they are the least of the horrors put on display, for the masters of monsters wielded sadistic cruelty with the grace of an artist.

This is Commorragh, the Dark City.

A place where mewling slave-things were herded into vast halls so their suffering might be condensed into a singular point that it might be feasted upon easier. Where man, woman and child were crowded into great arenas so their screams might add to the bloodsport. It was a place of sweeping, jagged edges that flared out into sickle towers tapering into a hundred-hundred knives. They emerged from swathes of darkness that burbled up from fetid, awful mismatched streets held together in sheer defiance of conventional architecture. Each section of ribbed, serrated building is an epitaph to a species-long history of sadomasochism.

This was Commoragh, the Drukhari’s only port in any storm.

From the fleshlabs of Haemonculi covens arose sanguine horrors held together by the wretched gene artifice of the Drukhari’s foremost surgeons. They wielded weapons across the entire spectrum of terrible, brandishing them upon whoever their Haemonculus masters deemed too irritating to continue abetting. Kabals of perfidious archons ply the ever-shifting tides of Commorragh’s maddening politics. They wield wit and statecraft as a warrior would their blade, but they relished in a particular strain of humiliatation and domination whenever they crushed another of their own beneath their thumb. And cults of wyches labored under the ever-intensive effort of their own exertions, hooked onto an ever-increasing cocktail of drugs that sent their already inscrutable minds screeching off the cliffs of lucidity.

This was Commorragh, an unseemly ulcer upon the underbelly of the galaxy—it’s where you go when there is no future left for you to hope for.

Where Glory Doth Wither

Over countless millennia, the Drukhari have whisked innumerable things into the shadow-riddled wound they call a city. Each one is a monster, each one a hapless individual, each one powerless to do anything against their new masters. But they did learn how best to appease or, at the least, avoid their overlords’ ire. Commerce continued in new and ever-inventive ways, even in a place like this. And unlike any other planet or void station in real space, Commorragh has a near-endless list of independent merchants eager to peddle their wares so they might scrounge up something to keep them alive and unshackled for another day.

But not every inhabitant, willing or otherwise, of Commorragh was content with the status quo.

There exist individuals who might be willing to fight if someone gave them cause, inspired hope in them again. Whether transhuman or divested of only the material manifestation of their iron will. You need only look for someone who might be willing to turn the knife back onto their tormentors to find an ally amid the dark.
