Crime Lord is an Origin. Origins in Rogue Trader are the possible occupations that the player character practised before becoming Lord Captain. The choice of Origin adds extra bonuses to your characters, such as additional Talents, Abilities, and bonuses to different Characteristics. 

Throughout the connective tissue and tucked away into the crevices of the Imperium are those wayward souls who would never think to bow to the laws of mankind. They are smugglers, cartel runners, deviants, dissidents and so much more. And they thrive behind the Imperial veneer of civility, thinking and doing that which would be considered aberrant to Imperial sensibilities.
The Imperium survives and prospers in no small part due to the narrowness of its vision, but a rebellious mind and will such as yours could not be so easily constrained. The dark paths of smugglers and renegades that wind behind the facade of Imperial society offer a dangerous refuge for those unwilling to bow to the law. You used to be one of these dangerous yet resourceful individuals.
