I used to be an officer in the Navis Imperialis. No, 'used to be' is not quite right. It was not simply a job — it was my calling, the essence of my life. I was proud to serve Lord Captain Theodora, but in my heart and mind, I am still an officer of the Imperium.

Abelard Werserian Lore

Career Officer

For some men, their purpose in life is a clarion call from which there can be no dithering as to its nature. They are blessed with certainty in who they are and what they were brought into life to do, carrying themselves with confidence and distinction. Adhering to the hierarchies and pecking orders by which they seem to slot into with a natural ease. And among these blessed few is the von Valancius seneschal, Abelard Werserian.

Beginning his life among the rigid hierarchy of the Imperial Navy, Abelard was quick to become an officer of no small repute. He lived a full life yet never settled down, even after finding a wife and bearing with her several children, who then went on to produce over ten grandchildren. None of which evinced the kind of proficiency he wielded when it came to serving aboard the navy. An outcome he considered neither a blessing nor a curse, allowing them to live their own lives while he carried out his own.

It was not until meeting Theodora von Valancius that Abelard’s lot in life began to change.

She took a shine to him after a cooperative venture performed with the dynasty and the navy, and then promptly referred him to her retinue. He was quick to accept so lofty a purpose as bringing the torch of civilization to the darkest corners of the universe. And his family was quick to follow after him

Ever since then, Abelard has served the dynasty with honor and distinction—something mirrored in his family, especially his granddaughter who serves in an administrative role on the capital planet of Dargonus.

Single Minded Focus

Having sired many children and being a widower, there is little left for Abelard beyond serving until his dying dies and acting as the von Valancius dynasty’s steward. His heart wants for little, and what it may have longed for has come and gone. Now, all he is left with is his still extant family, the Protectorate he helped raise, and serving the Rogue Trader to the best of his ability.

Little to no romantic advances might sway this stalwart officer’s heart.

For the Common Man

Despite his gruff demeanor and the pragmatism that guides his every action, the von Valancius seneschal has exhibited a meticulous concern for his fellow man. So long as they exhibit the propriety and diligence expected of every Imperial citizen, he has shown himself ready and willing to fight for them. Especially if they fall under the von Valancius banner.

He is considered an Adherent of the Iconoclast school of thought.

An Unflinching Bastion

Through decades of unwavering discipline and the rigors of office, Abelard has learned well the importance of being able to break through scores of enemies while shrugging off any punishment to come his way. All so his team might not have to shoulder such a burden. He has found most success in this by pursuing a mastery of melee weaponry, favoring chain weaponry first and foremost. But his talents go beyond this as a man of many grizzled years.

Abelard specializes in the Warrior discipline, which grants him several unique abilities. Among these are proficiency with chain weaponry and an excess of wounds and armor to soak up damage. In addition to this, he has several tools to make him a priority target as well as getting into the thick of it with his enemies, such as the Charge action.

Charge: The Warrior moves in a straight line and launches a melee attack against any target in the Warrior's path. This attack does not count toward the limit of the Warrior's attacks per turn.
There must be at least 2 free cells between the Warrior and the target to use Charge.

Beyond his discipline specialization, he also has several supporting abilities that further augment his ability to shrug off damage as well as provide extra durability to his teammates. One such ability stems from his Origin as a Navy Officer, one called Brace for Impact!

Brace for Impact!: For 1 round, the navy officer and their allies in a 3-cell radius gain +2 deflection for each archetype taken by the navy officer. They also cannot be forcefully moved or overpenetrated.
This ability can only be used once per combat.

To Find a Way Forward

For those who are steadfast in their certainty of both place and purpose in life, change does not come easy for the likes of Abelard Werserian. Whether from the changing of those whom he believed he could trust to the passing of Lord Captain Theodora von Valancius. He has thus far struggled to adapt to the new world thrust upon him.

This frustration manifests in many ways that, at first, seem innocuous and unassuming. After all, what harm could there be in performing his role in the same manner he had when Theodora still helmed the von Valancius dynasty? But it becomes quickly obvious that he is not sure what to make of the new Lord Captain and what their sudden authority means for him, his family and the future of the protectorate he worked so hard to build up with Theodora.

However, he would never allow something so trite as uncertainty to stand in the way of his duty as seneschal. And no matter what trails may come, he is ready to face them with his new Rogue Trader.
